In 2019, I opened a nursery for orphaned children, 0-5 years old. Currently (2024) we have 32 children and 12 staff.
If a child in a poor village loses one or two parents, their chances of survival decreases significantly and we often find children in these villages with little or no support. Once a mother or father dies, the surviving parent struggles to support their children, particularly if the have 3 or more children. If both parents die, then the children are left with virtually no support and many children will not survive. The nursery was opened so that we can support these children through the most vulnerable years of their lives.
The Orphanage school only takes children 6 years and older and i was constantly finding younger children in remote villages that had lost one or two parents. So I made an agreement with the Lao Government to take in children 0-5 years old and built 2 buildings that were suitable for young children and babies. When these children turn 6 years old, we place them into the orphanage school and support them through our orphanage support programs. Over the last 5 years we have had more than 70 children move from the Nursery to the orphanage school.
I plan to have up to 60 children in my nursery each year. The costs for supporting the nursery is expensive, however taking in an orphaned child will often save their life. We can guide these children through the most vulnerable years of their lives and support them through both the nursery school and the orphanage school until they graduate at age 18. I do need support for the running of the nursery and the cost to support 1 child every year is $US1600.
