Most rural villages in Lao have many children living below the poverty line.
We often find village children living in appalling conditions and orphaned children, in particular, receive barely enough support to survive as their adopting families are often quite poor themselves.
Many children in these villages seldom enter schools and many die from malnutrition and disease. Most children in poor lao villages do not receive adequate medical support, and those who do make it to hospital are often forced to return home before being properly treated when their parents’ funds run out.
With the orphanages now full, we continually survey villages for children in distress, so that we can support them in their village environment. Presently we have child support programs in 20 villages, supporting over 3500 children. We supply nutrition with milk and eggs, provide educational support at their primary schools, provide medical support for all children in the village and develop and build water projects to provide clean water.
An important part of our village support projects is the maternal health programme. I provide funds for every pregnant mother to give birth in a hospital setting which protects both the mother and baby. I supply baby formula to those mothers who do not have enough breast milk and we weigh every baby under 12 months of age and record their medical history so that we can intervene if the child becomes ill. This program is very labor intensive but it provides a level of safety that the mothers and children would not have otherwise
